Shyrl has had decades of providing direct patient care in the medical surgical and inpatient psychiatric settings, both adult and child units, focuses on patient-centered, holistic care by promoting harmonious, patient-provider relationship. She encourages collaboration in order to reach her patient’s goals by presenting individualized treatment options, allowing the patient to guide the direction of treatment. Shyrl has inpatient and outpatient experience treating children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients. Her areas of expertise include depression, anxiety, OCD, bipolar mood disorders, schizophrenia, substance abuse, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, impulse-control disorders, eating disorders, Autism, and PTSD. Shyrl provides a warm, calming environment that allows patients to feel safe and heard. Through understanding of neurobiology, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology, and life experiences.

She understands that people from all walks of life can suffer from mental health concerns at any given time. She strives to provide culturally competent care strives to provide safe non-judgmental or non-critical environment, while allowing clients to take an active role in the decision-making process of their treatment plan. She believes that successful medication management, in combination with therapy and other positive psycho social factors are essential to achieving mental well-being. She has worked in mental health for 20 years and Medical Surgical 20 years, and various other fields before having mental health experience. Shyrl has experience in both outpatient and inpatient settings, and most clinical training at UIHC. She enjoys working with clients with a variety of psychiatric concerns, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use and addiction, PTSD, and ADHD.

Shyrl completed a degree in Nursing at Des Moines Area Community College, and completed her undergraduate BSN at Grandview College Des Moines, Masters in Nursing Education at Clarke in Dubuque and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Allen College in Waterloo, Iowa.
