Medication Management

Medication management serves an important role in mental healthcare. It can help those in crisis or manage long term conditions. While some clients can benefit from therapy alone, many need a combination of medication and therapy interventions. Taking medication to help with mental health issues is a common practice. In fact, one in six Americans takes medication as part of their mental health plan.

What is MEDICATION MANAGEMENT

At Central Iowa Psychological Services, we support all aspects of client care, including prescribing and managing psychiatric and related symptom medications. Using best practices, current research, and drawing on the insights of leaders in the field, our providers develop individual treatment plans for our clients, and often prescribed in conjunction with therapy for best outcomes.

How Do I Know if I Need Medication?

Medication may not the best treatment for every mental health issue. After an initial evaluation with our psychiatric nurse practitioner, he or she will determine the most appropriate treatment plan with your clinician. The decision to take medication is ultimately up to the client. If you decide to move forward with treatment that includes medication, we will discuss possible side effects and proper dosages.

Based on the unique needs of each client, a combination of medication and therapy is sometimes the best mental health plan. Those experiencing depression, anxiety, or ADHD are most likely to benefit from a medical management plan.

Management Process

Managing medication effectively involves careful attention from both the client and the provider. Following instructions and proper dosages from your health care team is an important part of the management process. Psychiatric medication should never be taken unless a doctor or nurse practitioner has prescribed it to them.

A client's relationship with medication can evolve over time. Therapy may affect how and when medication is necessary. It's also normal for bodies to adjust and adapt to various treatments. Your provider or nurse practitioner is best able to identify side effects and assess the medication’s effect on your system.
